In John chapter 11, when Jesus wept, those in attendance believed he must have genuinely loved Lazarus. But why did Jesus weep?

Some say it’s because Martha and Mary wept, and he wept for them and the other mourners. When I first read their story, I couldn’t understand why Jesus would weep. He would soon take away their tears and raise Lazarus from the dead. He could reassure them they needn’t cry.

“Oh, but wait, Mary and Martha, and see what I’m about to do,” I imagine Jesus could say, with a reassuring smile on his face.

But Jesus wept. He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead; he’d been dead four days.

Where was Lazarus while his dead body lay in the tomb, overtaken by rigor mortis?

I don’t know how long it takes our spirits to transition from this life to the next, but I suspect by the fourth day, Lazarus was in heaven with God Almighty. Jesus knew from personal experience what it was like to live in Heaven, and He had to take Lazarus from that beautiful, perfect place; there was no other way to perform the miracle of raising the dead.

I believe Jesus wept for the unthinkable act He needed to do to Lazarus, to take him away from the glory of God.
