Strips of light near the ceiling poorly illuminated the halls in peaks and patches. Nina held her breath as she heard footsteps coming her way. The closer they got, the louder and faster her heart became until they were upon her.
"Oh," a medium build brown-haired man looked surprised as Nina stumbled out in front of him, "can I help you?"
"Yes," she smiled, "I'm all turned around, and I'm not sure which tube to take to get back to my room for the night."
"Cannot your AI lead you back to your accommodations?"
"There's something wrong with it," Nina tapped her left palm with her right finger. "I just don't seem to have a signal."
"Well, that is strange. Let me see if my AI can help yours," the unsuspecting victim flipped his palm as he stepped toward Nina.
Grabbing his left hand, Nina exerted pressure rotating the man's skeleton 365 degrees snapping his radius, ulna, scaphoid, lunate, and triquetral. Severed bones meant a broken connection to his AI. Nina strong-armed the mildly built man, thrusting him back away from the light. His body bounced off the wall onto the ground. Sauntering up to her chosen sacrifice, Nina pulled out her shiny, freshly sharpened blade. She kicked him to his knees as he tried to stand. Grabbing a handful of his short blonde locks, she pulled him to her chosen location to commit the sinful act.
"I don't understand," the poor soul stuttered.
"You don't have to," Nina said, her eyes shimming in the darkness.
Opening the garbage chute, Nina jerked her prey to the edge. She shivered as she put the steal to his skin. Taking a large breath, the man began to yell. But before he could utter a sound, Nina pulled the freshly sharpened edge along his throat, tearing open his flesh. The blood ran down his neck and dripped off his torso into the abyss as she leaned him over the chute. Twisting his eyes toward hers, she watched with anticipation as the light drained from them, turning them from a soft bright brown to a dull black.
Nina could feel her body explode with excitement. Wiping off her double-edged blade on the man's sleeve, she released her grip allowing his body to drop down the chute. She returned to her room, laying starry-eyed on the metal bed slat provided to her for the evening. Her body quivered from emotions that ran through it. She replayed the way the knife went through the skin and how his eyes dwindled at the end. She liked the control she felt, her being the one to decide when and where someone would die.
Nina had done it. She had taken control of her life by taking the light out of another's. She knew it was wrong, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was the satisfaction she felt. As far as she knew, she was the first human to murder another in over 357 years, and she couldn't wait to do it again.
Author Notes
Having got carried away and involved in the story I had written almost 3,000 words. After I posted the story one of my kind reviewers pointed out that I had gone over the limit allowed for the contest. So, although I am keeping my story the way it is I did go through and found the ending to be a good passage that still gives the just of the story. If you read the story and are interested in the whole piece send me a note and I will mail it to you. Thank you and happy reading.
