Linda, my fiancé, said we had to talk
drove to her house, skipped up the walk
bounced up the steps, pushed the doorbell
She came to the door, warily peeked out
sad blue eyes, I wondered what was about
her voice sounded with resolute tones…
“I’m so sorry, Jim, can’t do this anymore
my love has dwindled not like before.
Really, I’m just not ready, she said,
“Truth is I met someone else at work
I know, I’m sorry, I’m just a little jerk
Please forgive me, open your hand.”
My heart slammed against my rib cage
My brain on fire with blazing rage
I stood stunned, couldn't speak
Watched her slip my ring from her finger
Wanted to catch her hand, force a linger
She dropped it into the palm of my hand
Tears gushed, I stumbled down the stairs
ran to my car, my mind utterly impaired
sat watching the sun sink low…
Now I see Linda only late at night when
she springs forth from my suffering soul.
