Tony's place was well known around town. His high stake poker games every Saturday were famous. Dark wood paneled walls, leather sofas and a long, well stocked bar welcomed any hopeful gambler.
Rumours around town claimed that Tony had even installed a safe room with bullet proof glass. In case of any trouble.
Joe and Ted cleared the glasses and wiped down the bar.
The door suddenly flew open and two masked men burst in.
Joe turned quickly, pushing Ted to the floor in his haste to run. He dashed to the safe room and slipped inside.
The bolt slid firmly into place.
The thieves stood and looked around.
They looked first at Joe behind the glass, running his hands through his hair as he paced.
Then they looked at Ted on the floor.
They realized that the poker game was over and there was no money to be had.
One of the thieves then held out his hand to help Ted up off the ground. He ruffled his hair roughly and whispered something into his ear before they left.
Joe then sidled out of the safe room.
'Phew eh? What did he say?'
Ted pushed past him and shrugged into his jacket.
The door slammed behind him.
And the moral of the story is, misfortune tests the sincerity of friendship.
