Constantine thought of other things, happier things, anything other than the pain in his hand. “Strip clubs, nude royals, okay, just Kate.”
He glanced down at the spinning talisman digging into his hand. There was no blood, but then he knew there wouldn’t be. Dark magic required a price. Blood was the price for the location spell he was using.
The talisman pointed left, but that led him to a brick wall. “Bloody hell.” John had to smile at the pun since he was in Hell, and it cost him blood.
His eyes watered as the talisman continued to dig. John moved around, but the needle always pointed at the wall. “Damn mazes!” John pulled the amulet out of hand and stuffed the bloodsucking thing into his coat pocket.
He placed his unholy hand on the wall. “Well, I trusted that bloody thing this far.” John closed his eyes and chanted,
“I call upon the darkness within.
Heed this soul shrouded in sin.
As with those who built the tower,
seeking to match his holy power.
Let your terrible evil might
destroy all within my sight.”
The wall exploded inward in a hail of broken bricks and dust.
Darkness greeted him. “Illumination.” A glowing white ball rose above his head, lighting the room.
Sitting on a throne made of human bones sat a gorilla-sized demon. “I was wondering how long it would take you to find us. Any longer and I would have taken this little mortal.”
Sandra, the missing Theology graduate student John, was hired to find knelt naked at the demon's feet. She appeared physically unharmed. Her blue eyes were vacant as if her mind had fled.
“Well, John, let us finally test your might against mine. The winner gets this little virgin. I would have soiled her after she foolishly summoned me to kill her rival, but her fragile mind broke at the sight of my cock. She actually thought I would kill her roommate without her paying a price."
John sighed and put his hand into his pocket. “Fine, a duel, but no cheating?”
The giant demon advanced. “I promise. I don’t need to cheat.”
"WelI, I do." John suddenly pulled a revolver and fired.
When the smoked cleared, the demon was on his knees with a smoking black hole in his forehead. “How?”
John lit a cigarette and approached the demon. “The Archbishop of London blessed my bullets.”
“You… cheated.” The demon turned to ash.
“That's the price of not listening. I never promised a bloody thing.” He gently lifted Sandra into his arms. “Let’s go home.”

Sandra’s parents were relieved and heartbroken. John brought her body back, but he couldn’t promise her mind ever would return. Like many, Sandra believed in something for nothing. Everything has a price, especially magic. John left, hoping the demon really didn't deflower her; he hated the thought of coming back in nine months. Demon spawn were hard to kill. Was Sandra's mind the price she paid?
