The Niagara River was the gateway to freedom for many

Niagara River - Freedom's Gate

by Mary Furlong

Flow
gently
wide river.
Invite brave souls
to cross on their way
to freedom. Let it shine
from your distant shore in the
afterglow of sorrow's sunset.
Call to them. Welcome them. Beyond your
constant waves, they'll find what they have longed for.

The shore of the Niagara River was the last stop in the U.S for many travelers on the underground railroad. They crossed at night, undercover of darkness, but freedom must have shone its light for them even then.
