Your biggest dream
Bookish
by zanya
I've always wanted to research, write and publish a book. I can see your eyes glazing over already. 'So what,' you're probably thinking. 'That's hardly a big deal for a member of a writing community like Fanstory.'
But it is a big deal. You see, writers, to me, have always existed in the realm of the 'Greats,' Shakespeare, Frost. Dickens and their ilk. Not for ordinary mortals like me. Not to mention their subject matter. It would have to be lofty and almost ethereal.
But as I watch the parade, if I may call it that, of writers in the past decade or so, who have come to the fore, writing has changed its spots. It has come within the reach of ordinary, perhaps less gifted mortals, than the likes of Shakespeare.
Writers are bursting out all over. Writers of keep fit, cookery, fashion, how to..books. The list is endless. Writing has changed dramatically.
How many of these books will survive longterm and still be read a couple of hundred years hence. Not many probably, because their subject matter will have evolved significantly in a rapidly changing world.
So now, I tell myself, I have no excuse!
Writing is not just about writing. When the writer has produced his work, that's probably only half the story. The other half, maybe the more difficult part, still remains to be tackled. Marketing and publishing is a mammoth task, not to mention the cost of same. Of course there are online sites to self-publish. Who would want to read my book? What will it be about? Will it have to be entertaining?
How we read has changed. No longer do people sit on a chaise longue, sipping afternoon tea while wading through pages of text. Our attention spans are getting ever shorter, especially among younger generations, who spend more time scrolling than reading.
We also seek more sensual gratification through reading. Love and sexual experiences need to be short-circuited, not long drawn out. We don't have time for that. Not even during a pandemic!
The money heist needs to happen quickly. The murder must be completed without undue delay. No unnecessary hanging around.
We are often told not to judge a book by its cover. That's difficult these days. Since a lot of publications carry a picture/sketch of the author, not necessarily of the subject matter, thereby enabling the purchaser to choose by favourite author.
And so to my little attic study to, as we say, these days, consider my options. Better get on with it before the reading tide swirls again in yet another new direction !
