Mother with Child

by Aussie

The gate clicked, she tossed her head
I walked slowly toward glowing coat
Hoping to fix her head to lead
Not knowing she lost her bloat

Upon the ground a tiny caul
Bending down to see the wonder
Mother came and pushed me asunder
Proud she was of her new foal

Trusting mother nuzzled my hand
Hoping she had not offended man
Sitting in the bloody, blue caul
Watching mother clean her all

Legs so shaky he could not stand
Mare gave him a helping hand
Under his belly lifting him high
A tear formed in my eye

How wonderful is nature's love
For man and animals born
His love sent from above
New birth, new life, forever dawn

New foal is born in the paddock. For those who do not understand what 'caul' is, it is the blue-bag the foal slips into the world in. Also Dragonpoet wanted to know what 'bloat' was. Self explanatory, I thought. In this case it was a metaphor for a mare who had lost her big belly because the foal had been born.
