Memory Lane

by Diana L Crawford

As I travel down
my memory’s lane
there are both good
and bad to ponder
sometimes they are like
perfume for my mind
and others quite
bittersweet

The joy of motherhood
and family offers
the most precious gifts
so many days of fun,
hugs, joy and sadness
filled with innocence divine

I journey on
to remembering
the life of a young girl
morphing from
a pot-smoking, tree-hugging
rock-n-roll hippie
into a young adult
proudly serving in the
Women’s Army Corps
far away from all
she’d known

And last stop
my childhood
where the deepest of love
could be found
on grandpa’s lap
yet one still sprinkled
with the bitter way
of a fatherless child

Memory lane is filled
with many treasures
uniquely mine –
an umbrella on a rainy day
