Memory's Reawakened Moments

by Mrs. KT

Dedicated to the memory of my mother, Ann R. Kenel: 1923 - 2007

Ravaged by relentless pain and debilitating loss,
My mother departed this world;
In bits and pieces of memory's reawakened moments,
She returns, vibrant and whole, time and again:

Always in blooming waves of nature's splendor
Carpets of nodding lilies of the valley
     Clusters of golden marsh marigolds
Rows upon rows of cobalt blue delphinium
                                                                        I feel her presence

Oftentimes during instances of quiet discovery
A tarnished brooch silently waiting to be found
Her grandchildren’s giving hearts and caring ways
Faded snapshots placed between pages of dog-eared books
                                                                        I see her smile

Sometimes amid life's daily challenges
Loved ones' burgeoning doubts or missteps
     Societal expectations demanding blind acquiescence
Isolation's crippling silence in a strident, discordant world
                                                                        I channel her strength

Assuredly among welcoming hallmarks of home
Freshly baked blueberry cobbler oozing rich goodness
Grapevine wreaths decorated with plump bittersweet vines
Imperfect Christmas trees adorned with twinkling white lights
                                                                        I hear her laughter

Invariably within the landscape of each day's gifts
        Candlelight's soft glow on a snow-swept evening
A Monarch butterfly gently alighting upon a stem of lilac blossoms
Northern Michigan sunsets viewed from a sheltering bluff
                                                                       I share her mindfulness

In truth,
I have little need for a designated holiday
To honor my mother’s ways
Or to celebrate how she filled my life
with meaning and wonder

And yet…

On this Mother’s Day
I shall rise early
walk along the woodland pathways of my world
gather a small bouquet of her beloved lilies of the valley
place them in her favorite cobalt blue vase
and whisper a silent prayer of thanks:

For all you were
For all you continue to be
For a lifetime of unconditional love
This day belongs to you, Mom…
