A Mother's Becoming

Awakened in an early morning June hour
Pains flashing through me; I felt their power
Water broke and fell
I was put under a spell

Entered hospital before the dawn
No support, as day dragged on
Waves of pain, half minute apart
Anticipatory joy swelled my heart

Supports arrived when evening came
Hope and confidence I could reclaim
Baby's first cry, I gave him his first kiss
Moment of glory, never-ending bliss

Mother's Day Poetry Contest contest entry


The day in June when I gave birth to my son. It was a happy/sad day, at times I was lonely during labor with no support person, then a few women arrived to support me and I was filled with happiness, confidence, joy.
