Summer Heat

by Martie Zuckerman

The rain danced on the hot pavement, steam rose in its wake
Except for the humidity created, it would be a welcome break

Old folks sat on porch rockers, watching the storm grow strong
animals scurried for cover, while birds suspended their song

Lightning arced across the sky; chased by a thunderous bellow
While the heat wave rolled on endlessly, sparing nary a fellow
