Poem of the courageous last tomato

Benjamina

by Marjon van Bruggen

There she is, red and glowing
the last small and lonely
tomato.

Her stalk is brown and withered
ready to give in to autumn winds---
still supporting.

Through my window, I have seen her grow
from a green little plant, then tall and
proud.

The first little flowers peeping shy
changing into green small
buttons.

Her brothers and sisters, grown into
big red tomatoes then sacrificed for
tasty salads.

And then, unexpected as an afterthought
another dapper little flower, struggling but
alive.

She became my darling, my joy of morning
to see her fight, determined to do it all
alone.

Ripe now, I shall eat her, today,
reverently.

Small and unseemly can become so important.
