A Normal Family

by Marjon van Bruggen

The mother knits a shawl.
The son is at war.
The mother accepts this as completely normal.
But what is normal?

And the father? What does the father?

He is a businessman.
His wife knits a shawl,
his son is at war,
fathers are in business,
Is that not completely normal?
But what is normal?

And the son, what does the son think?

The son does not think at all,
the son's mother knits a shawl,
his father has his business and
sons are at war. When the war is over
he'll go into business with his father.
He doesn't have to think. This is normal.
But what is normal?

The war goes on,
the mother knits and knits.
The father does his normal business.
The father and the mother do not hear
very often from the son, well...normal.
But what is normal?

A strange envelope with the mail:
not normal.
The son will not follow the father
in his business, that is
not normal.
The mother stops knitting a shawl.
That is quite normal.
But what is normal?
