Magical Summer Nights

by Diana L Crawford

Free Verse Contest Winner

The summertime carnival
was forever our delight,
offering up a chance
to live like kids again
and feel the bustling
atmosphere of excitement
rain down around us.

We strolled arm and arm
down the small walkways,
stopping to enjoy each
unique game or vendor booth
and their special items.

Oh, the prizes you won!

Candy apples, shaved ice
and elephant ears
were always on our list,
even cotton candy
and hot dogs
and coke in a cup.

But the grandest of fun
was the big Ferris wheel
where I could hold you tight
as we ascended
and descended
to and from
heaven and earth.

You'd comfort me with
the most tender of kisses
as we spun wildly
through the night air.

We were mesmerized
by the breath-taking view
of the glittering colored beams
coming from the lights below.

Then, home we'd go;
exhausted, but happy,
still laughing and
chatting about
the evening's amusement.

Upon a shelf, I have collected
all of the precious trophies
won by a heart that was
so true to me on those
magical summer nights.

my best friend...
