Memories of the stones decorated with hearts.

My Heart Will Crack

by LisaMay

We painted hearts upon some stones
and skipped them out to sea.
Years later, I’m here alone
with a heartbreak memory.

My heart will crack,
singing it’s sorrowful song.
This memory of our moments takes me back
to where I once thought I’d belong.

Pebbles on the beach –
and you now out of reach
when once you said you’d be mine –
are reminders of
my trusting love.

I thought that would define
my future life, as your wife,
but here the heartless stones are bare.
You don’t care
that love was there.

And now all I have to share
is my aching soul and a poem of woe
as I tread our beach, so slow...
so tired, so old,
with love gone cold.

Tomorrow’s one more lonely day.
The sands of time will trickle
as our stones are ground away.
Our love, once strong, proved fickle.

The seagulls cried,
and I did too,
when your love died
and I lost you.

Writing Prompt
Look at some old photographs and write about a memory or a thought that they give you. If possible (not required) include the image in your poem.

Author's Note:
The photo is a detail of an artwork I made many years ago with pebbles I painted from a beach that was special to me and my then beloved, who had recently broken up with me. The artwork has since fallen to pieces, like the relationship did, but the photo of it remains as a reminder of my grand passion.
