Bipolar I with Psychosis disorder...

Prisoner In My Own Head

The Prisoner Contest Winner

The voices - they are never ending. Some say I should kill myself. Others encourage me to forgive myself. I argue with them all through many tears.

The cycle - one day I'm up, life feels great; in the same day, I'm in depression's pit of hell. My thoughts never give me a break.

The meds - they make me feel dead; I get scared I won't wake up, so I don't take them. I'm a prisoner in my own head.

Writing Prompt

My grandson (23) was recently diagnosed as Bipolar 1 (rapid cycling) with Psychosis. Its onset was quick. As we have become educated about this lifelong mental illness, we have also learned how hard it is to get him to understand the meds can be adjusted. He has been hospitalized twice since October, and the last major episode only a few weeks ago ended with a shot of an anti-psychotic medicine. He is afraid to go to group therapy and is struggling with possible private therapy. He truly does not see what we see, but this story is how we see it affecting him. Thank you for reading. It has been a hard story for me to express, but this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Bipolar 1 (rapid cycling) with Psychosis

Most people with bipolar disorder will alternate between manic and depressive episodes once or twice a year, sometimes within same day. Others may only experience this once every few years. However, a small subset of people will undergo what is called rapid cycling in which the mood swings come fast and frequently.

Rapid cycling may, in some cases, be a precursor to more severe manifestations of the disease, including psychosis. This is more often seen in people with bipolar I disorder
