Sioux Prisoner

by RodG

The man hung from a stake in the middle of the Sioux encampment. A rawhide thong bit into his neck, kept him barely upright. He was naked, his flesh now blistered from the hot sun above.

His eyes were swollen shut, his lips scalded. Fiends danced around him two long days and last night. He could no longer see them and barely heard them.

They'd found him half-buried in a dry wash a day's crawl from that bloody ridge. He knew the others were all dead. They'd died heroes.

Not him. He'd die screaming when they lit the pyre.

This story is inspired by the book CUSTER SURVIVOR by John Koster ((2010). It is commonly believed that the 210 troopers under Custers command were killed to the last man. Kosters careful research concludes that one man, Sgt. Frank Finkel, escaped from the deadly encirclement of warriors.
