Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
Free verse

Sleep

I can't sleep
eyes drifting into darkness
and I still can't sleep
even though the night passes softly
imagined feet padding stepping-stones
across curls of water
the night like black velvet
your quiet snores the sound
a frog makes jumping in still water
again and again
and night birds lift voices into
my almost-dream
my body restless as dry grass
not heavy enough for sleep
and I worry that I'm
not needful enough of oblivion
a kind of letting go
that is just one step shy
of heaven
