Backyard negotiations

The Squirrel and the Chipmunk

by HarryT

“Hey, there Chipmunk, hold up,”
Angry Squirrel chirped scrambling
Down the trunk of the Sugar Maple tree

Shock Chipmunk stood nervously as
Squirrel’s shadow loomed over him

“Whatta you want, “squeaked little, chubby-cheeks
Looking up to the brown, smooth-faced, big tailed, giant

Squirrel boomed, “You little punk, better stop
Stealing my nuts and seeds from my land;
Your pilfering is getting too out of hand”

“Hey, big guy,” little Chipmunk anxiously said,
“I got a right to live, just like you. And by the way,
You know we are of the same family, don’t you?”

I know it’s true, but we are far removed “
But all the same, stay away from my food”

Chipmunk said, “I live in a hole and
You high in a tree, but we both have the
Same family needs, don’t we? Might
We not fight and share what we have
And live peacefully in the warm sunlight?”

Squirrel roamed about then stood on
His hind legs, flapped his busy tail
“Okay, okay, I see what you mean
I don’t need fighting or making a scene”

“Right you are!” Chipmunk squeaked,
“How about we agree to divide the
Backyard half and half. My family will
Take the front side and yours take the back.”

Squirrel thought and thought and finally
Said, “I don’t want to fight and that sounds
Like a fair thing to do, why don’t we bring
Our families together, share what we have?”

So, it was done, and they lived in
Joint harmony, happily, ever after
