A memory.

A Gift

by tempeste

I remember my mamma telling me
when I was but a teen
she had tried to take her life
when the man she loved
and trusted left her in strife.

She was expecting her firstborn,
felt she couldn't cope on her own.

In a moment of despair, she tried to end the pain
but destiny had a different plan.

An unexpected visit saved us both,
she woke up hazed in a hospital ward.

Next door to her was an elderly lady,
her time on earth was at an end.

They exchanged a few words during the day
then that night before she passed away
she leaned closer and said :

"Take my slippers darling, you are without.
I won't be needing them after tonight. "

A week later mother was released,
she was wearing the slippers and a dress
that was getting shorter by the week.
