Streak of Light

A pallid streak of light lit up the eastern sky. Back home, in Anya's village of Jedasna, Grandma would be baking breakfast bread in the black, earthenware pot.
Her father Nasha's shirt would be damp with tears for dear, departed Ava. Ava and Nasha were inseparable since childhood. Sometimes Anya felt like her arrival had interrupted their idyll.
Anya's head ached from the gasoline smell in the old boat. Grandma's holy medal felt like a rock inside her boot.
Fidgeting nervously with her phone, she realised it was dead. Not only no clock, now, but no contact.
Never in her nineteen years had she felt so lonely.
Quietly she cursed Nasha for paying the smugglers.
