Divided, we fall

Lost Meanings

by Helena Frances

The words that were written:

"One nation
indivisible,
with liberty and justice
for all"

and

"Give me your tired,
your poor,
your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free,
tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp
beside the golden door!"

These are beautiful,
inclusive words,
now challenged,
still ideal
and hopeful
for tomorrow.
