The Cure

by Brian Taylor1

I was at the beach when I decided to become a marine biologist. I was at the beach when I got skin cancer... And I was at the beach when I developed a cure.
When I was 30, I got my results from a dermatologists appointment that I went to and there it was, malignant melanoma. I was shocked. My doctor wanted me to start chemotherapy immediately. I started to think. I thought of life and death. The thought of death scared the life out of me. No way was I going to let skin cancer take me to God. No way was I going to let it cause a ripple effect after my death knowing that it would generate so much pain for my mother, my relatives, my friends, my co-workers, and anyone else who can relate. I then took matters into my own hands and went to work on a cure. I combined my knowledge of marine biology and my free flowing mind that was cultivated by a soulful connection to the ocean. I thought there was a strong possibility that if I took buckets of ocean water and enough box jelly- fish to fill my bath tub that I would be onto something.
My plan was to take a bath with the jellyfish and let their tentacles sting me all over while injecting a poisonous venom that just might kill the cancer cells that have invaded my body. They have gotten into my lymphatic vessels draining every inch into my skin then getting into my blood supply turning it metastatic. If the jellyfish don't kill the cancer the cancer will kill me. It was time to get busy. I started by getting buckets of ocean water and began filling my bath tub. Then came the hard part. I took a large fishing net and went way down to the end of the beach where bunches of sea weed stood tall in the water and the seemingly invisible box jellyfish floated peacefully. I thought again about how many I would need. I took 3, hoping for the best, and put them a bucket filled with salty ocean water.
After a prayer I put them into the tub and got in. Right away all three of them stung me. Wow,
did it hurt. A burning sensation began to take over my left calf mussel where the stings had
occurred. What a rush. I started to get nauseous as if I were sea sick. Feeling like I was gonna
pass out, I contemplated calling 911 but didn't have to. All I needed was some warm water to
lessen the pain and vinegar to reduce the potency of the venom so I didn't die right there. What
happened next was the reason why I moved to Antarctica and went to work for National Geographic
studying climate change.
The next day I felt strange. I called my doctor, the dermatologist, and asked if I could come in. I did
and he ran some tests. The day after he wanted to see me right away. As nervous as I could be, I
hurried to his office, shaking the entire way. When I arrived he came rite out with it. He told me that
I was cancer free. While both of us were amazed I explained my experiment and told him that we
should partner up, 50-50 and cure skin cancer all around the world. He was speechless. I left his
office thinking I might have a partner. What I did have was a visit from men in suits claiming to be
working for the government who told me not to say a word about the cure. I then got 2 death threats about the same matter. I was not to be bullied. Heck, I not only beat cancer but found a cure.
That night I went on line looking for a way to get investors to come on board. I also made several
calls to old friends from college seeing if they might want in. Later the next day, my credit company
notified me about a $20.000 shopping spree using my card, I denied any transactions and cancelled
the card. Then I found out that my bank account had been drained. After another death threat, need-
less to say I got the hint and got out of town, maybe for good. Antarctica is not as cold as I thought it would be and climate change is for real. As for my cure for skin cancer, It exists in the ocean just
beyond the beach.
