Inescapable Nightmare

by DragonSkulls

Worst Nightmare Contest Winner

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
I was dreaming of bullets
that zipped past my head.
I was dreaming of fire
and stench of the dead.
I was dreaming of killing
for staying alive.
I was dreaming of murder
so I could survive.

I dreamt of the children
that blew themselves up.
I dreamt how their fathers
could be so corrupt.
I dreamt of my comrades
losing their limbs,
and the ones who were captured,
tortured and skinned.

I dreamt of the bombings
that killed our own men.
I dreamt of the horror
when it happened again.
I dreamt of the choppers
that fell from the sky.
I dreamt of the screaming
while watching them die.

I dreamt of the faces
as boys wept to men.
I dreamt I'd not see
my dear wife again.
I dreamt that my baby
might not know my eyes.
I dreamt if she asked,
would I tell her lies?

I dreamt of the hatred
I had for mankind.
I dreamt of a God
that left us behind.
I dreamt of a hell
as death mocked our fates.
I dreamt there's no mercy
where the devil awaits.

I dreamt of the bodies
that lie at my feet,
with nowhere to run
nor chance to retreat.
I dreamt of a nightmare
that shocked me awake.
I dream of a war...
I'll never escape.
