The Longest Day

by Sally Law

The battle had been hellacious, the enemy pounding us into submission with artillery fire.

Our wounded were suffering; food and supplies were scarce.

I sent word by messenger requesting provisions. My trusted lieutenant courageously volunteered to ride along.

The lookout was to alert me as soon as help arrived.

The afternoon sun revealed a wagon kicking up dust as it made haste to our encampment.

It was my sister, bearing Kool-Aid, Oreos and bologna sandwiches.
