A Sad Horse

I Stand Forgotten

by damommy

I stand here alone, hoping someone will visit.
It’s surely no way to be treated, now, is it?

My mane and my tail both could use a good brushing,
but so far, I haven’t seen anyone rushing

to do this for me after so many years
of giving them joy, hearing laughter and cheers.

Many’s the time when I let children ride
and they held on so tightly, half-scared and wide-eyed.

They thought me the prettiest horse ever seen
and spoke of my eyes and my coat with its sheen,

and the fun that they had as they rode on their own,
knowing they were quite safe and would never be thrown.

How happy I was in those days way back then.
I wish I could go back and do it again.

But now they’ve grown up and have all moved away
and I haven’t seen them for many a day.

Declining years came as a matter of course,
and so goes the last days for this rocking horse.
