Can't We Talk?

Jane told me our engagement was off. She said she could not marry me because she was in love with another.
“It's true, I’m sorry," she said."It must feel like lightning is piercing your heart.”
I said, “Can’t we go to our lake and talk?”
“It won’t do a bit of good," Jane said. I’m really in love.”
"That's what you said to me."
She consented to come with me. I drove to the lake we said was our special place.
As we walked along the shore, thunderheads roiled overhead. Lightning streaked out of a cloud and struck her dead.
