Without and Within

Whenever I walk into that room at home,

my father greets me in his own silent way.

He is always there for me,

and was always there for me.

Memories of always and forever true grit.

Now he’s mere grit in that antique urn –

ashes to ashes.

I run my fingers over its bronzed face,

feeling the warmth of its solid artistry

crafted by a master’s hands.

The surface is now lined and pitted.

Oh, my dear father, I miss you –

your love and your imperfections.

What lies within adds value.
