Picasso Grieves

Ode to Pablo's Old Guitarist

by Santiago2

Who grieves with you guitarist, who is doomed to never weep?
Ageless fingers resting on forever silent strings.
The world will never hear the sterile chords that you conceive...
Stars outside your window cannot beckon you to sleep.

Vacant eyes, your hanging head and feeble frame reveal
the secrets that you guard of Pablo's scars and inner strife.
Ivory limbs and fragile fingers numb in their despair,
Picasso's dearest friend has used a gun to end his life.

Grace has tempered Pablo's grief,
But you'll not have the same relief.
Your music will not reach the ears
of wealthy patrons through the years.

Strum the ballad of your plight,
Of pain that's unconsoled.
A silent ode to Pablo
Whose genius gave you soul.

Recognized

Pablo Picasso painted "The Old Guitarist" just after the suicide death of his close friend Carlos Casagemas. It was the first work of his "Blue Period."
