Usually the final step of applying to a Select College like Harvard or Northwestern is a personal interview with the College Admissions Director. It can be very stressful for the candidate because the questions are very candid and nothing in his written application or transcript is ignored. Often the personal essay is THE determining factor if he will be accepted. I assigned such essays in my junior English classes during the Spring semester, and each student spent weeks writing and re-writing them before including them in his college file.
