She was gripped by abject terror. Her breathing was labored. She was shaking and sweating. And oh, the chest pains! She pulled the car over and stopped, took slow, deep breaths and relaxed her muscles. The panic attack began to subside.

Thankfully, I don't suffer from panic attacks, but I know people who do and they have described it to me. It is a truly frightful experience.
