For some of us winter overstays its welcome.

Aunty Winter

by HarryT

The old lady whirls into the neighborhood,
From her home way up northerly way
No doubt who she is because she always wears a
Snowy, flowing gown and an icy crystal crown

Lashes the last vestiges of Jack’s leaves from the trees
Festoons home gutters with an array of dangling icicles
Leaving them to drip, pool and freeze on the ground

Touches icy fingers to branches now naked
Creating a musical by-product of a tinkling,
Ringing, morning, wind chime symphony

She’s an old aunt who overstays her welcome
Residing with us from November until late March
Playing with roiling clouds that spread
Blankets of white, she tells us she is only
Tucking the grass and plants in for the night

She wants us to indulge her and forget
Her "insufferable sister," Summer, who plies us
With warm sunshine and days at the beach

She endeavors to bribe us with ice skating
Sledding, fort building and snowballing wars
Some of us will miss her, others of us
Will be happy when Aunty goes home
