a 200 word story
peter pan and me
by judester
The task was enormous I knew. To repair my neglected log cabin and clean the surrounding forest in order to sell. If I put it on the market as it was, I would take a big loss.
During the day, I cut and dragged wood, opened my view and worked in the garden. At night, inside. My antique cast iron stove sat rusted, my maple floor scratched and dull.
Like a tinker, bells from old sleighs hung in the trees to let me know when the wind picked up. Every corner and drawer needed to be cleaned out. Dusty fair posters and momentos reflected forty years of my life.
The summer passed and I just kept working, never once thinking of how big a job it was, physically and emotionally.
One day, my friend came to visit and looking around, told me that this was impossible for me to complete alone.
I then realized that I had been running on blind faith and thought of Peter Pan teaching the kids to fly. As long as they believed, they stayed aloft.
Tired and worn out, I walked back to my cabin and wept. I felt my feet softly touch the ground.

Writing Prompt Write a 200 word story. 200 words, no more, no less. (Not counting title.) No rules but the 200 word count and what your story "CAN'T" be about. No stories about pets. Period. No stories about aging or effects of aging. Alzheimer's, cancer, dying, deathbed love or confessions. Nothing concerning being or getting old. No stories about love. Falling in or falling out of, betrayal, commitment, everlasting, none of it. Love = disqualification. Other than that, have at it. Not too long, not too short. You don't need to have a conflict and resolution either. Just a 200 word story. Not flash fiction. Use as many descriptive words you want. I'd prefer humorous but not everyone appreciates humor as much as I. Have fun though. DS |
Thanks to Renate Bertodi for the perfect illustration. Of course I could not put my entire work list, well over 200 words and rotted logs and leaking porch roof are not so poetic. I am still at it and would have loved to illustrate my story with a before and after photo of my refinished cast iron stove, but those who know my limited computer skills will have to settle with this painting.
