Remembering Mother's Cake
Upon Stopping at the Mailbox
Upon Stopping at the Mailbox
I stopped at my mailbox # 3
There was mail but there was also a key
For expected packages USP delivery
Its mysterious contents were for me
I thought and I thought, what might it be
On my ride up my long hill, I had more time to think
It could be my k-cups for coffee to drink
But it weighed more than cardboard and plastic
It had to be something more fantastic
I was so excited, I knew I was right
There was something wonderful happening this night
Looking at the address my sister had sent something to me
I wondered, oh, my goodness, what could it be
Now some of you may be like my sister and me
Exchanging memories of things your mother used to bake
When I opened the surprise box there was a cake
A tomato soup cake with raisins galore
I looked down and saw there was more
You see, if mother did not frost the cake, it would last all day
But with sour cream frosting, it was soon gone away
This unfrosted cake before me gave me time to think
If I frosted it, it might be gone in a blink
She'd given me frosting in a jar
Which made me drift off to a time afar
When I'd come home from a rough day at school
Many of the kids had been so cruel
The cake was there to greet me as I came through the door
And then I didn't feel as broken and sad anymore
As I write this poem the tears do flow
The answer to the why's I will never know
But I'm certain, when, at midnight returning from work
Especially on occasions when someone's been a jerk
And I am greeted by the memory of Mother's cake each night
No matter what has happened everything is all right
And now, dear sister, our mother is smiling from above
For you have reminded me of her deepest care and love
