Windows to the Soul

by pome lover

His face no more—
The skin is tightly drawn.
Where once a nose,
Just holes—the rest is gone.

His mouth that smiled
And melted women’s hearts
Now burned away
Along with other parts.

And oh, those eyes—
Once full of merriment,
Now shine with tears
Of undisguised torment.

His wondrous eyes—
The depth of feeling there—
The warmth of love
Then blankness of despair.

I kiss his face
As lightly as I can
To let him know
That he is still my man

And lying there
He locks his eyes with mine,
And shows me that
It’s love that makes them shine.

But those dear eyes
Soon tell me, without sound,
It won’t be long
Before he’s not around.

His eyes so blue
They challenge God’s own skies,
Begin to close,
And with a sigh… he dies.

I will recall
The face he had, before,
But my love’s eyes
Will live forever more.
