Into the Poetic Fray

by Mrs. KT

I eagerly entered the poetic fray,
Convincing
myself on that composing day,
All would read and surely embrace
My heartfelt entry with voters’ high grace.

And yet, that was truly not the case:
Dismay was followed by palatable disgrace.
No one voted for my chosen words meant to inspire;
I was singing to one tone-deaf poetic choir.

Surely I had a credible message to share.
Devastating. Did no one really care?
I wrote with no mistakes or guise;
Were my words not witty or wise?

Feelings I meticulously created to express
Obviously didn’t pass the voters’ test.
My perfected form did not count,
Nor did the obvious vast amount
Of stanzas that were all so very true,
Formed of my world and its well-loved view.

 In the aftermath of unanimous rejection,
I found myself open to inner contemplation.
I could have disappeared without a trace,
Freefalling flat on my not so anonymous face.
And yet, I knew there was only one thing to do:
Compose another poem for the world to view.
Take up my pen and pray that my recalcitrant muse
       Would again color my words with appreciated hues.

Should my words again not garner applause,
I’ll study them carefully and examine their flaws.
I must remember, and remember it well:
I am a seasoned writer, not a washed up, broken shell!
Validation must not hinge on winning contests, of that I am sure,
Especially when a writer composes words that are honest and pure.
That is the challenge and reward a writer must learn,
Especially when said offerings may be rejected and spurned.
I’ll keep on writing, hoping my words will inspire...
Even if I may be the one off-key singer in the internet poetic choir!
