Cornbread Without Butter

by Sis Cat

Poem of the Month Contest Winner
That takeout Chinese food has left me in the mood
for some down home cookin'. Can't get to sleep starin'
at your empty pillow. In the moonlight it glows.

And now it's three a.m., and I'm hungry again.
I went to the kitchen to look for some fixin's.
I found your cold skillet with no cornpones in it.

I'm like
cornbread without butter,
my bed without a lover.
I can't find another
who bakes it hot like you.

Cornbread and butter,
the two need each other.
Life without a partner
has made me sad and blue.

Now I'm cornbread without butter without you.

At our wedding banquet you had quite a fit
when the caterers served crackers with the hors d'oeuvres.
You, in your wedding dress, baked cornbread for the guests.

And, on our honeymoon in the middle of June,
you slathered my body's ev'ry nook and cranny.
Now you left me alone while my love for you groans.

I'm like
cornbread without butter,
my bed without a lover.
I can't find another
who bakes it hot like you.

Cornbread and butter,
the two need each other.
Life without a partner
has made me sad and blue.

Now I'm cornbread without butter without you.

The way to a man's heart is through his tummy
when a woman cooks for him somethin' yummy.

The way to a woman's heart is through her mind
when a man is satisfied, faithful, and kind.

At the Piggly Wiggly, don't know what got in me,
I searched along the aisles, hopin' to find your smile.
I'd first noticed you here when your voice caught my ear.

You had squealed at the deal on corn to grind to meal.
Now you've got up and gone. Woman, I did you wrong.
I sure made a mistake in your sister's Easy-Bake.

I'm like
cornbread without butter,
my bed without a lover.
I can't find another
who bakes it hot like you.

Cornbread and butter,
the two need each other.
Life without a partner
has made me sad and blue.

Now I'm cornbread without butter without you.
Now I'm cornbread without butter without you.

Months ago my friend Monique interrupted me during lunch. "Andre, I want to hear your new poem."

"I'm eating cornbread and butter right now."

"Did you say your poem's titled 'Cornbread and Butter?'"

"No, but that would make a great title for a song."

"I would like to hear that!"

That miscommunication resulted in this Country Western song.

Picture of Kendee's famous buttermilk cornbread is Google.
