Comparison between life and the bottom sheet

The Bottom Flannel Sheet

by Liz O'Neill

Waking up under my bottom flannel sheet
Shifting around, wiggling a little, wiggling a lot
To the top of my bottom flannel sheet I fought
But found under the bottom covering were still my feet

Struggling to get above it all, twisting, turning
On top of the bottom and under the top
So exhausted, I thought finally my struggle would stop
To discover still to be on top of the bottom was my yearning

Did you ever notice when your jumbled thoughts wouldn't stop
We create many of our struggles with no one to blame
If we ask why of life, the answer will be the same
No matter how much we shift around we can't seem to get ourselves on top
