A lot can change with a phone call.
24 Hours

The alarm clock went off, playing soft light rock. I slipped out of bed, stretched, and headed to cook breakfast.
Eyes clouded with sleep, I followed a path trodden many times before. I didn't need to flip on lights. My feet knew the way.
Life was comfortable because it was predictable.
And then, the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Mrs. Evans?"
"Yes?"
"This is the police. We have your son in custody."
"What did he do?"
"He was apprehended vandalizing a toy store."
"Really?"
"Yes, Ma'am."
"With what?"
"Green and purple spray paint. He kept calling himself the Joker."
"How long can you keep him?"
"Well, we were hoping you would come get him."
"And if I don't?"
"About 24 hours."
"Keep him."
I stumbled back to bed and crawled under the warm covers.
Who needed predictability when you could have 24 hours of peace?
