The Phone Call

She called me on the phone and said, "Please come right away."
She hung up. I wonder why the sadness in her voice.
When I arrived I asked, "What is the problem?"
A stream of despondency poured from her mouth. I only understood, "Jamie, Jamie."
She grabbed my hand and led me to the kitchen. There on the floor was Jamie.
"Will you come with me to make arrangements at the cemetery on Maple?"
"Of course, yes," I said.
She picked out a grey headstone and asked that the epithet read, "My Jamie boy, born a dog, died a gentleman."
