My faith

By faith I know one Monday morn
before the moon and stars were born
and ere the universe began
that God sat down and hatched a plan.

He filled the void with galaxies;
He spoke— the task achieved with ease.
In each, a hundred billion suns;
on Earth He placed His chosen ones.

Then at the feet of Terra's kings
the Lord had set all living things,
to conquer and to subjugate
and decorate their dinner plate.

As time went by man's love grew weak;
Jehovah, in a fit of pique,
inflicted a most dreadful fate—
He drowned the lot of them, bar eight.

This act might seem quite harsh to you,
but faith assures me it is true.
Unless you want to feel the rod,
it's best that you don't mess with God.

For without Him our way is lost;
Our compass gone, our ship soon tossed
upon the sea of sinfulness.
There is no hope at all unless...

we place our faith in things unseen,
and to be clear, by this I mean
to fear the Lord and keep His law,
just like the patriarchs of yore.

So this is how the story goes;
A tale of wretchedness and woes—
of failure and apostacy;
life without faith is misery.

* * * * * *

But what if none of this is true—
it's all in fact a witch's brew
of lies and fantasy and bluff;
a litany of made up stuff

designed to keep us all in tow;
maintain our status far below
the autocrats who wish to stay
our rulers for another day?

To help control the rabble crowd,
they call us arrogant and proud.
If we do not live by their rules
the Good Book will proclaim us fools.

They weave a story for our ears
to frighten us, exploit our fears.
By faith we'll all be kept in line
and everything will be just fine.

Yet I can see we have a choice—
I hear within a still small voice;
encouraging, beseeching me
to set my captive spirit free.

For love and hope abide, not faith;
I'll not give credence to that wraith.
With reason as my sure defence,
henceforth I'll trust in common sense.

Faith Poetry Contest contest entry

In response to a couple of review comments, I just wanted to add a couple of explanatory points:

Firstly, "defense" is spelled with an "S" in American English, and a "C" in UK English. I chose the spelling of my ancestors.

Also, where I'm from, "yore" and "law" is, in fact, a perfect rhyme. I understand it isn't in some places. We Aussies are a lazy lot, and don't like to take the trouble to roll our Rs ;-)
