Nightmare

by Curt Mongold

Reeling with confusion, this illusion that is real,
comes to me like tapestry with swirling dark appeal,
up against the fence, my mind is tense like razor wire,
but it won't last the coming blast of naked, screaming fire.

Inundated by the sound that dances 'round in glee,
I'm greeted by the sight that comes this night to torture me,
I'm caught up by the sin whose evil grin spreads by degrees,
to cover me in agony as I fall to my knees.

My body feels the heat as my heartbeat keeps growing faster,
I cannot rise above the lies of such a cunning master
who takes control of my torn soul and hides it in the shade,
to mold and shape and rip and rape until his price is paid.

Obliterated hope lies on the slope of heaven's door,
and when it dies I know that these eyes won't cry anymore,
just around the bend there is the end so well defined,
where in the stark, unyielding dark, there's peace that I might find.

Mixed meter, internal rhymes of course and what it is about? Some nights, the mind has a mind of it's own.
