Ironically, soon after writing my original comment below, while feeling confident that we somehow were being spared winter's discomforts - seemingly as a response to my wishful thinking, winter asserted its option to behave normally.

Aside from a couple of days in early January, the winter here has been anything but long and cold. In fact, uncharacteristically, there have been few indications that it actually is wintertime. Temperatures in the 50's and 60's have been common, and a few times they have been over 70. So, theoretically, an old guy like me could forget what he loves about Winter.
