We meet again

One last kiss

Poem of the Month Contest Winner 
ONE LAST KISS

We held hands when we were kids
You were my very best mate
We played, we laughed, we kicked tin lids
In each other's company we'd appreciate

Teenage love was meant to be
We spent every day together
Meant for each other, we both could see
Our love would never sever

But my life changed when you moved away
Your parents moved interstate
We made a pact this love would stay
And our love would always wait

The years have passed, I still think of you
Though life took a different way
But our love will last and I always knew
We'd be back together one day

When I walked into the room that day
In that local nursing home
I saw a lonely figure on display
There was no need for me to roam

For I knew that face! I knew those eyes!
Although my dementia had made me hazy
That beautiful smile you couldn't disguise
 I knew I was senile, but not crazy!

For it was you! You had a tear
Running down your face
I think you knew it was quite clear
It was a feeling we couldn't replace

We talked for hours about our lives
We had so much to remember
We talked about those husbands and wives
 We had lost back in September

Our eyes were locked on each other's face
Those lines could tell a story
Just can't believe we'd end up in this place
And reminisce of our life and glory

We held each other's hands again
Just like those days when young
Sat and thought of those days back when
That love song we had sung!

So when it's time our days have passed
And we leave this life we'll miss
I'll take your hand, right to the last
And give you one last kiss

I wrote this poem over 4 years ago before I had joined FanStory. I wasn't sure if i had posted it before because it had no title I have now called it one last kiss.
I am my harshest critic of my work but I really like the sentiment in this poem inspired by this lovely photo.
