A chapter in the book Patterns

Cold

by estory

Cold
Colder
Colder than snow

The faces in the crowd
In the snow
White stillness, stare
Without speaking about
What just happened
Until

They can no longer move
Out of the cold
On the street
Where everyone is standing
In the snow, watching

The people
Walking away

Without saying anything

This is a poem about social silence, the difficulties we have in intervening in crowds when something terrible happens to an individual. we often just seem to stand there looking at each other, frozen, or else we walk away, or we don't say anything. we blend into the white.
