Type 1
Partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or the prepuce.
Type II
Partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without
excision of the labi

Type III
Narrowing of the vaginal orifice with creation of a covering seal by cutting
and appositioning the labia minora and/or labia majora, with or without
excision of the clitoris (infibulation).
Type IV
All other harmful procedures to the
female genitalia for non
-
medical
purposes e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterization.
COMPLICATIONS OF FGM
There are no known positive health benefits associated with FGM.
Women who
present with complications should receive care that is culturally responsive and non
judgmental.
Referral to Psychological Ser
vices or counselling may be required
depending on the individual clinical situation.
