An interesting prospect
Long Term Cellphone Usage And Cancer
by Brett Matthew West

Everywhere you look these days most people seemingly have a cellphone glued to their ear whether they are driving a vehicle, eating supper, or even talking face-to-face with you. (Which this writer finds particularly RUDE!) But, the question remains, is so much cellphone usage healthy for you?
Over the course of the next thirty years in five European countries, COSMOS, the Cohort Study on Mobile Communications, will attempt to examine the possible links between such diseases as cancers and neurological disorders attributable to long term cellphone usage.
Because the widespread usage of cellphones has only been popular for about the last ten years or so, other health studies that have been conducted around people already affected by such ailments limit their scopes and possibly contain a lot of errors. COSMOS's longer study will allow the time for diseases to develop while people use cellphones and hopes to achieve results from those tests.
Many cancers take as long as fifteen years to develop. That is one reason the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Program of England will attempt this study. With about five billion cellphones in use worldwide, no evidence of their harming human health has been discovered YET by such organizations as the American Cancer Society, the National Institute of Health, or the World Heath Organization.
National advisory authorities recommend minimizing the electromagnetic radiation emitted by cellphones, typically found in the microwave range. This situation also presents researchers the question of whether long term cellphone usage is harmful or beneficial to health?
The maximum SAR, or Specific Absorption Rate, allowed by the Federal Communications Commission for electromagnetic radiation exposure is set at 1.6 watts over a one gram of tissue volume. The human head can absorb as much as two watts of Ultraviolet Alpha Rays when using cellphones. This is a rate that can be automatically increased or decreased by the phone in different situations such as indoor and outdoor usage.
Dielectric heating, in which living tissues are heated by polar molecules induced by an electromagnetic field, typically occurs at the surface of the head causing temperatures to increase, and the blood flow to the brain to increase, to eliminate this excess heat. However, the corneas of the eyes can not rid themselves of this heat exposure, which has been reported to lead to cataracts in rabbits used for cellphone and health studies.
Studies of long term effects of cellphone usage, and the possible risks of cancers resulting from them, include:
1. A 2004 Danish Study over a ten year period that found no evidence of any links but was highly faulted because it accepted many results from subscriptions, not users.
2. A 2005 British Study suggested no evidence of acoustic neuroma intracranial tumors were developed within the first ten years of cellphone usage but could not eliminate the possible long term effects that may develop.
3 - A 2006 German Study that stated no increased risks of gliomas (a type of cancer that originates from glial cells in the brain or spine) or meningiomas (a type of cancer that originates in the meninges around the brain and the central nervous system) were observed among cellphone users but lacked confirmation results.
Other possible long term effects of cellphone usage on human health may include such things as cognitive deformities, electromagnetic hypersensitivities, genotoxic issues (that may cause damage to the genetic information in cells), sleep disruptions, the effects of the radiation used in cellphone infrastructures on people who live near them, and the long term effects of active cellphone equipment on telecommunications workers.

Sitting in my office here in Nashville the other day I hosted a local Magazine Publisher interested in the prospects of publishing an article I had written a while back.
I frequently do this. It makes a good impression when you are trying to persuade them to publish your work.
Any way, the entire time he was in my office he had his Nokia glued to his ear. To me, anybody who talks face-to-face with you while on their cellphone is extremely RUDE! with a capital R-U-D-E!!!
That experience lead to this article.
(By the way, I ended up selling the article he and I had discussed to another publisher. The life of a Freelancer!)
Aint cellphones FUN?, by MKFlood, selected to compliment my article.
So, thanks MKFlood, for the use of your picture. It goes so nicely with my article.
(In case you haven't noticed, MKFlood is quite a talented Illustrator. Several FanStorians use many of his pictures with our writings.)
