Remorse

by Ogden

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
Remorse

He accuses.
I deny.
He challenges, I oblige, he thrusts,
I parry, my foil finds flesh,
Friend dies.
Fiancee lied.
Never bride.

I killed
My friend!!
My guilty conscience tortures me relentlessly!
Will my consuming contrition continue endlessly?
Iniquitous lie!
Must I
Also die?

I awaken
Relieved, unshaken.
Last night wasn't as it seemed.
No duel, killing, as I deemed.
Deed undone!
Only one
Damnable dream!
