I held my hand out as a greeting
only to have it ignored
by some one I raised that wasn't mine
to be left standing alone and flawed

It had been twelve years since his mother left me
it had been that long since I seen him
he sure made his point of where he stands
of that I have no doubt or whim

I got him his first job and his first car
I gave him good advice and direction
so why was I shunned, my handshake denied
I can only surmise with discretion

I guess that's just the way it goes
that life can serve up a short one
but I know who and what I am
and good manners fall short on some
